I thought I would run the pre upgrade checker to have a look at the health of the environment and to also see what is involved in upgrading to 2010. For those who don't know, the command is as follows:
stsadm -o preupgradecheck
One of the things I got was the following:
Name = [Unknown], Feature id = [5e12b147-0098-4975-835e-46ce01bf44e3], Reference count = [2], Scope = [Web], Status = [Missing]
I had several of these. As this was a test environment, there are features deployed and tested so it is reasonable to expect this. The best tool I found to get rid of these was to use the feature admin tool on codeplex. Simply click on the find faulty feature in farm button, it will iterate through your farm and with prompting, ask if you want to remove the faulty feature.
I did this, re-ran the check and success! no more faulty features! ( Note - be sure to check what the features are before indiscriminately removing them in prod )
